How to Burn More Calories and Boost Your Metabolism
by Abby Austin
Metabolism. Frequently used as justification to eat whatever we want at a younger age, but more often an excuse for why we don’t meet our weight loss goals.
Every time you intake food or beverage, your metabolism converts those calories into energy. While your age, body size, gender and genetics determine much of your metabolic rate, there are scientifically proven lifestyle changes to increase your metabolism. Therefore, a faster metabolism yields more calories burned.
Here are SEVEN ways to help ramp up your metabolism and maintain better body composition:
1. Get a good night’s sleep. Research has proven that not receiving enough sleep can slow metabolism. Going to bed and awaking near the same time daily can help build a consistency. The healthiest night’s sleep is 7 uninterrupted hours.
2. Don’t skip breakfast. Eating first thing in the morning prepares your body to start burning calories right away. If you are short on time or find yourself with no appetite in the morning, make sure you still grab a quick snack such as greek yogurt or hard boiled egg.
3. Drink coffee or green tea. Though coffee gets mixed critics regarding its health impact, the caffeine is quickly absorbed into the blood stream, increases heart rate and boosts metabolic rate. Green tea is packed with antioxidants and pumps up metabolism
4. Increase your workout intensity. High intensity interval training (HIIT) jumpstart the metabolism and keeps burning calories hours after the workout is complete. Even better if you workout in the morning to help put that pep in your step.
5. Pump some iron. Strength training isn’t just for building muscles and leaning out, it also increases resting metabolic rate which helps burn calories all day.
6. Spice things up. Adding capsacian, a molecule found in spicy chiles, is found to raise body temperature and speed up fat loss -though for a short time and in small percentages.
7. Eat sensibly. Certain foods are known to help boost metabolism such as lean meats, egg whites, grapefruit and tuna. Starting your morning with protein and antioxidant packed food turns your body’s fat burning potential up a notch. Eating enough (5-6 meals) throughout the day keeps your calories burning at its prime.
